Porpoise Earrings – Good Luck from the Maritime World

Horseshoes and the number 7 are probably the most popular symbols attributed to good luck. But my experience in the vastness of the blues thought me otherwise. And yes, I was about to witness my most staggering connection with good luck when I found a porpoise.

It was the third day on our bespoke trip to Cuba. The day before, we had been thrilled by some of the most fascinating histories and architectural structures, which offered us a fine mix of the region’s culture and tradition.

Today, we had planned a day out in the big blue sea and all I looked forward to was capturing the song of the sea and soaking myself in the deep ends of the brilliant visuals of the maritime world. I needed it. Yes, upon learning that I had to scale through a very complex test before securing promotion at the office, it became obvious that I needed all the peace and quiet – and even luck – I could get.

The sky threaded with silver. The sea flowing in all its glory. But it is the flutters of the in the distant that caught my attention the most. Could it be a pod of dolphins?

I mean, we had a bay of Naranjo Nature Park on our itinerary. And we were told about the dolphinarium there – with dolphins and sea lions. But being up close with dolphins in the wild? I wasn’t letting that moment go, so, I quickly reached out for my camera to capture a few once-in-a-lifetime moments.

But it wasn’t a dolphin. At least, so I was told by the local on the boat. As the creatures approached, they seemed quite like dolphins, but the local was quick to point out a few minute differences. It was a porpoise.

Throughout the ages, a porpoise encounter is considered a good omen and a symbol of luck. So, I wasn’t going to let this one just go away. As I tried to work my hands through its sleek body, I felt the warmth of the porpoise on my palm. It soon dropped something that looked like a charm at first, but it was just a dirt pebble.

Nevertheless, it was a moment worth savoring. I became confident in myself again – ready to face my fears, no matter what they were.
